Service station staff locked themselves in a safe room after some young people, who were allegedly trying to steal drinks, threw cans at an attendant who tried to stop them, NT Police said.
NT government crime marketing manager Sita Bacher said in a statement that at an unspecified time “early” on Tuesday morning, two young people entered the Caltex service station in Katherine and attempted to remove some unspecified items from the fridges without paying for them.
“When approached by a staff member, they retaliated and threw cans of drink at the attendant, hitting him and bruising his arm,” she said.
“Staff took precautionary measures by locking themselves in a safe room while the offenders turned their attention to the till and items behind the counter, stealing cash and tobacco before running from the area.”
Ms Bacher said the youths were still on the run but police were urging anyone who knows their identities or whereabouts to tell police.
No footage on the police camera trailer that has been parked there? They probably ran home to the nearby camp or to Katherine East ghetto laughing all the way.
