Senator Sam McMahon resigns from the CLP

Senator Sam McMahon has resigned from the Country Liberal Party and could sit as an independent in the Senate until the next federal election.

Ms McMahon confirmed to the NT Independent on Friday night that she had resigned from the CLP, but said she has no immediate plans to join another party.

She also did not provide a reason for the resignation, although she had been vocal last year that some CLP figures had employed “nefarious and underhanded tactics” to defeat her for preselection for the Senate.

Speculation escalated in recent days that Ms McMahon would be defecting from the party to join minor party the Liberal Democrats, although that has not yet occurred.

It is unclear at the moment what the resignation will mean for the Coalition Government. She had been sitting in the Nationals room in Canberra as part of an association between the CLP and the Nationals.

Her resignation however could make passing legislation difficult for the Morrison Government before the election is called if she moves to the cross bench. However, it is likely Ms McMahon would continue to support the Morrison Government.

It is also unclear what her resignation will mean for the Country Liberal Party, that may not have enough members to qualify as an official party for the federal election after changes to rules governing minor parties passed Parliament last year.

Ms McMahon lost preselection for the CLP’s senate ticket last June to Jacinta Price.

Ms McMahon had told the NT Independent earlier this week that she had been approached by minor parties in Canberra about joining them – “every party but the Greens”, she said.

But she stated that while she had no intention of defecting to another party that “a day is a long time in politics and you never rule anything out”.

CLP president Jamie De Brenni was contacted for comment.
