Coroner Elisabeth Armitage has been accused of withholding full recordings of her coronial visit to Yuendumu last year and hiding correspondence from parties to the Kumanjayi Walker inquest, while her counsel assisting allegedly colluded with the NT Police executive to get Zach Rolfe disciplined and fired, newly released court documents allege.
The details of the application calling for Ms Armitage to recuse herself from overseeing the inquest into the death of Mr Walker on the grounds of “apprehended bias” were only released late Friday evening, after Ms Armitage earlier in the week issued a gag order on the reporting of the details of the application made by Mr Rolfe’s lawyers.
I fail to see why the chief justice has failed to shut down this inquest that appears to be nothing other than an attempted replay of the Supreme Court case.
From the very outset the inquest has been more interested in shaming police lower ranks than determining what actions and decisions by senior police and in particular the actions of the OIC of police at Yuendumu. If racism is a consideration it should also be applied in regards to the stabbing and other incidents prior to the shooting. It was always an option for community leaders to assist police in apprehending Walker.
A huge farce and total waste of taxpayers money.
