Lawyers for a group of Gunbalanya and Laramba public housing tenants have argued in the Supreme Court that the rationale behind the NT Government’s flat-rate rental calculations is unethical and unlawfully punishing tenants in remote areas.
The flat-rate charging scheme – which calculates rent based on the property’s number of bedrooms – took effect in February this year for tenants of public housing outside urban centres, and saw 70 per cent of remote renters paying more.
