A $34 million water security program, dubbed ‘Better Bores for Communities’ has been launched across the NT to improve water security, quality and supply in 10 remote communities, following the NT Government’s failed legal bid to overturn a court ruling that found it was obligated to provide access to safe drinking water in remote communities.
The newly announced joint Federal and NT Government initiative aims to foster growth and development by ensuring a reliable water source for seven communities and expanding access in three additional communities. The total investment includes $27.8 million from the Commonwealth Government via the National Water Grid Fund and an additional $6.5 million from the NT Government.
Although overdue this is a good initiative and both the federal and NT governments should be congratulated. There are compelling related questions that should be answered in the public interest- how much did each appeal cost, who recommended it, and who approved?
