The Remembering Cyclone Tracy committee has organised a series of events at the end of December to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Cyclone Tracy.

Committee chair Richard Creswick said the 50th anniversary was a time for reflection and commemoration of Darwin’s resilience.

“These commemorative activities will bring together survivors, their families, and the wider community to reflect on the events of 1974 and celebrate the spirit that helped rebuild Darwin into the vibrant city it is today,” Mr Creswick said.

“Cyclone Tracy, which struck Darwin on Christmas Eve in 1974, was one of Australia’s worst natural disasters, leaving much of the city in ruins.

“This 50th anniversary is a significant milestone, providing an opportunity for survivors to gather, share their stories, and honour the memory of those impacted.

“It is also an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable journey of recovery that has made Darwin the resilient and diverse city we know and love today.

“Cyclone Tracy transformed our city, but it also united us in a way that defined our future.

“I also give my personal thanks to all committee members for their hard work and dedication in organising these important commemorative activities.”

The events run from December 23 to December 29. For the full list of event,s and to buy tickets, visit the Remembering Cyclone Tracy 50th anniversary website.
