The Federal Labor Government has made good on its threat to divert funding from the NT Government to community organisations over concerns the Finocchiaro CLP Government is failing to deliver for Indigenous Territorians, moving to divert $80 million through a Closing the Gap program to the NT’s Aboriginal peak body.
Federal Minister for Indigenous Australians and NT Senator Malarndirri McCarthy revealed at federal Estimates Monday that she had “made adjustments to the Northern Territory Remote Area Investment [NTRAI]” program that will see nearly $80 million of the $842.6 million committed in funding diverted to APONT to help “build the capacity” of Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) to deliver more services with the intention of those bodies taking on the delivery of further services from the NT Government.

The CLP has a very long track record of not wanting to properly fund Indigenous issues. Back in 1975 the Whitlam government instituted bilingual programs in remote NT schools. The CLP, then in power, did everything in its power to get these shut down. Waste of money. It’s not working. The kids are speaking Kriol, not the traditional language, blah blah. Not much has changed.
Whitlam started this debacle. By the way, we didn’t have self-government until 1978. DDuuuhhhh.
Ok I should have said, the CLP when it came to power. Doesn’t change my point. Rednecks are rednecks.
When will politicians realise it’s not a funding problem. Money can’t solve the issue of people refusing to look after themselves and actively destroying their community.
With Barb in charge this money will all be spent on $140.000 troopies in town.
Lexus is now preferred, ever since Great Man G.Y. got his with flames down the sides.
Have none of our ‘leaders’ worked out yet that none of this is about money? Sure, the %mob thinks it is, as do the Politicians and Bureaucrats. Sit in the dirt (instead of a Mosque) with the few remaining genuine elders and come up with a plan. My only concern is that the complexity may be a little difficult for the limited intelligence of our politicians (particularly Federal). Everything (particularly money) undermines their basic culture. If you want a solution, LISTEN, but not to the wannabes.
Can the truth be told, the closing the gap framework is widening the gap. Elders are in all ethic communities, not just Aboriginal! Sadly they have betrayed their youth & children as decades of grievance culture and perpetual victimisation has stopped the personal development of the Aboriginal race. Champagne socialist 2016-26 NT Senator Malandirri McCarthy can be mostly found travelling QANTAS and using the chairman’s lounge, she can’t be found in Darwin. The uniparty is adversarial VOTE ONE NATION.
One Nation wont change anything, unless you are whilte and Aussie born you miss out, its very simple. Pauline has never been a friend of the indigenous
“That’s quite a leap! From Closing the Gap to Qantas lounges to One Nation, all without a single fact about improving outcomes for Aboriginal people. If jumping to conclusions were an Olympic sport, you’d be flying business class to LA for the gold medal!”
The CLP mentality to move YiSSa residents to Batchelor- Out of Sight, Out of Mind- won’t work. Batchelor (sadly) doesn’t have the economic or infrastructure capacity to cope with D-Town’s homelessness problems, nor with vulnerable people. It is still recovering from the influx of Daly River residents who were unceremoniously placed there.
$80 million redirected to Aboriginal organisations because apparently the only gap the NT Government has been closing is the one between funding received and services delivered!
This is nothing but a political stunt!
The Federal Public servants have always eyed all brands of NT Politics with severe skepticism when the NT comes begging for cash (and Beggars we are).
This is just Federal Labor Government pulling a stunt on a medicant NT CLP Government for a do-nothing Sydney based Senator that was a former 3rd rate ABC Journalist.
And giving the money directly to a indigenous organisation is a Guarente it will be spent wisely? Me thinks not!
The Whitlam Australian Government took similar action against the Bjelke-Petersen Queensland Government in 1975 -51 years ago.
