NT Police are seeking witnesses after a man lured a child into an abandoned car and indecently assaulted her in Tennant Creek on Monday night.

Police said between 7:30pm and 8pm, an “unknown male” engaged in a conversation with a young child at the front of the child’s home “before leading the child into a nearby abandoned vehicle”.

The man is still at large.

“Police attended the scene immediately and a crime scene was declared,” a statement from police said.

“Detectives from the Regional Crime Division have taken carriage of the matter, and are calling for public assistance to help identify the alleged offender.”

The offender is described as being of Aboriginal appearance in his 20s with a tall, slim build, with curly hair and was wearing a red shirt at the time of the incident.

“Anyone who witnessed a person of the above description or has CCTV footage, within the vicinity of Whippet Street, is urged to contact police on 131 444,” police said. “Please quote reference number 10260793.”
