NT Police are calling for anyone in Katherine with video of last Thursday’s dangerous driving incident that saw up to seven youths tear around town in a stolen vehicle to contact them, as police seek to “actively identify and locate the remaining youths involved” after arresting two youths over the weekend.

The incident lasted hours and sparked outrage from the community with roughly 50 members of the public gathering on Katherine’s Main Street last Friday to demand action against crime.

Police had said over the weekend they “understood the frustration” of the community but defended the decision not to initiate a pursuit prior to the stolen car eventually crashing, which they said could have escalated the situation and put more people at risk.

Police said in a statement on Tuesday that they had identified “a number” of people involved in the dangerous driving incident and are continuing the investigation into the incident that shook the town.

“As part of the ongoing investigation, police are appealing to members of the public who witnessed the incident, or who may have captured any part of it, to come forward,” said Senior Sergeant Warren Scott.

“Police are particularly seeking dash-cam footage, mobile phone vision, photographs or CCTV that may assist investigators to formally identify those involved and establish their movements before, during and after the incident.”

Snr Sgt Scott added there was likely to be additional footage of the incident that has not yet been provided to police.

“Even if you think your footage is insignificant, it may provide investigators with the piece of information needed to formally identify those involved,” he said.

“This was extremely dangerous behaviour that placed other road users and members of the Katherine community at risk. We are committed to ensuring those responsible are identified and held to account.”

Police arrested two youths aged 13 and 15 for their alleged roles in the incident, while an 11-year-old was issued a summons to appear in court.

Police said work was continuing to identify the others involved.

“Anyone with relevant footage or information is urged to contact police on 131 444 and quote reference NTP2600075622,” Snr Sgt Scott said.

“Anonymous reports can also be made through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
