An Alice Springs cabbie had his taxi stolen by two men, one of whom had allegedly threatened the driver with a knife, who also made off with cash and the driver’s phone, NT Police said.

The men remain at large despite police tracking the taxi by GPS and deploying tyre spikes.

Around 9:45pm, the driver went to an Araluen address when he was approached by the two men. Police said one of the men threatened the driver with a knife before making off with the car, cash and the phone.

Police said the driver waved down a passing police vehicle to report the robbery.

“Police were able to track the taxi by GPS, and deployed tyre deflation devices,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Schumacher.

“The vehicle was located abandoned at a nearby shopping complex.”

It was unclear how the men were able to evade police after having their tyres deflated or why police did not follow the stolen vehicle.

The men have not been apprehended. Police said their investigation is continuing but did not offer a description of the suspects.
