NT Police are searching for four paintings the agency said are worth thousands of dollars that were stolen from an Ali Curung art gallery last Friday.

Police media manager Margaret McKeown said in a statement police are looking for assistance after four paintings were taken from the Arlpwe Art and Culture Centre after 1pm Friday, and said local police were working closely with the victim and art gallery to locate the paintings and return them to their rightful owner.

She said two paintings were by Maria Dickenson, a 91cm by 91cm, which consists of a series of predominately white dots on a black background with blue and yellow shapes, and another 91cm by 91cm piece, which consists of a series of predominately white dots on a black background with red and yellow and orange lines.

Ms McKeown said the third painting was one by Warrick Miller, which was described as a 180cm x 120cm piece displaying a series of white squiggly lines surrounding three dotted circles with a bold white circle in the centre.

The final artwork was a 91cm x 91cm piece by Sonya Murphy consisting of red and white circles.
