NT Police have “exhausted” all leads trying to locate a Holtze prison escapee who walked out of the facility while security systems were down more than a week ago and are now letting the public know about the escape in the hope someone can assist in locating the missing 30-year-old.

Police are asking for the public’s help to locate John Scott Thompson who they say left the “open security section” of the Darwin prison in the early hours of July 4.

While Thompson is not considered “a risk to public safety”, a corrections staff member told the NT Independent the man walked out of the prison because there were no cameras or door alarms operational at the facility at the time.

“[The] security system was down in the area, [he] just walked away,” the source said.

“No cameras or door alarms operational [at the time].”

NT Police said Mr Thompson was a low-security prisoner “convicted for non-violent offences and is not considered a risk to public safety”.

They added he had “links” to Darwin and Katherine and that police have “exhausted their initial avenues of inquiry and are now seeking public assistance to locate him”.

“Mr Thompson is described as being of Aboriginal appearance, 30-years-old with a medium build,” police media manager Rob Cross said in a statement.

“If anyone knows the whereabouts of Mr Thompson they’re asked to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Please quote reference 10050698.”
