A 48-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly touching an eight-year-old girl inappropriately while she sat in a car with her infant siblings outside a takeaway shop in Casuarina Tuesday afternoon.

NT Police said around 4pm, a mother left her vehicle briefly to go into an unnamed takeaway shop, leaving her three children, aged eight and 18-month-old twins, in the car.

The woman told police that when she returned, she saw a man standing at the passenger side of the vehicle with his arm inside the car.

“The older girl alleged that the man had touched her inappropriately,” NT Police media manager Rob Cross said in a statement.

Mr Cross did not say when, where or how the man was apprehended.

It was unclear how long the alleged perpetrator was on the loose or if he had committed any other offences that day.

The investigation appears to be ongoing and police are seeking witnesses to the indecent assault to come forward.

NT Police released a later statement to confirm the man had been charged with gross indecency involving a child under 16 years of age and would appear in court on Thursday.

Police urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident at Casuarina to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and quote reference 9602217.
