A 21-year-old police officer has been charged with aggravated assault, NT Police have said, with media manager Rob Cross saying the information was released in accordance with the force’s transparency guidelines, despite another officer’s recent fraud charges still not being made public.
Mr Cross said in a statement the male officer was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and bailed to appear in Katherine Local Court on August 29.
He said the officer was being investigated by Ethics and Professional Standards Command.
Mr Cross said because the matter was before the courts, no further information will be provided, and the information was provided in accordance with the NT Police transparency guidelines.
Despite the transparency guidelines NT Police has not made public that Constable First Class Dave Trenerry will face Darwin Local Court later this month charged with one count of obtaining benefit by deception.
It is understood Constable Trenerry is friends with former chief minister Michael Gunner.
Mr Cross has twice refused to answer questions about why police have not made the charges, and also why Constable Trenerry himself had been transferred into EPSC while he was being investigated for alleged fraud.
The EPSC investigates and oversees any matters involving police – including off-duty officers – in relation to complaints by the public, alleged internal disciplinary issues such as a breach of policy, and potential crimes, which in their policy document includes the example of fraud.
