UPDATED: NT Police are investigating after a driver in Acacia travelling to work on Tuesday morning said he struck an object on the road that he later identified as a man, with police seeking the public’s help to identify the injured man who remains in hospital in a critical condition.
The driver claimed to police around 4:10am Tuesday that he believed he had struck an object, but after turning his vehicle around to investigate, located the unconscious man.
St John Ambulance attended the scene and the injured man was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition.
Police said the driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs and “is assisting police with their inquiries”.
Chibnall Road was closed Tuesday morning while investigators continued their investigation but has since reopened.
The injured man is described as Caucasian in appearance, aged in his late 20s to early 30s with dark hair.
Police said anyone with information about the incident, “no matter how small”, is being urged to contact police on 131 444, quoting reference P26178127.
Meanwhile, the number of fatalities on NT roads increased to 15 following a fatal single-vehicle rollover on Hodgson River Road near the Roper Highway on Monday afternoon, police said.
The crash occurred around 3 pm, approximately 10 km north of Minyerri.
One person was found trapped inside the vehicle.
Emergency responders from Mataranka and Ngukurr, along with personnel from Minyerri Clinic, rushed to the location.
Major Crash detectives said there were four individuals in the vehicle at the time of the crash. One man was declared dead at the scene with police yet to identify him.
The other three occupants sustained minor injuries and were taken to Minyerri Clinic for medical care.
