Police hunting group of men who allegedly attacked a young woman

UPDATED: NT Police say they have arrested a 29-year-old man in connection to an alleged group assault on a young woman near Casuarina Beach on Friday night.

In a statement on Monday afternoon, police said the man was arrested on Saturday, after members form the Domestic Violence and Sex Crimes Divisions executed two search warrants on residences in Tiwi and Malak, where a white truck and other items were seized.

Police said the 29-year-old was “assisting police”.

EARLIER: A young woman who managed to escape a serious attack on Friday night, allegedly by a group of men, is being treated in hospital for her injuries, NT Police have said.

Detective Sergeant Gavin Hopwood said the 28-year-old woman was assaulted, allegedly by a group of men on Friday at around 7pm near Casuarina Beach, where there was a number of other people.

He said the woman was found by a passer-by on a nearby road after managing to get away from the assault, but police say the alleged attackers had quickly fled the scene.

Police have not released CCTV footage, but believe the men left in two vehicles; one of the vehicles is believed to be a white, medium sized rigid truck.

Sgt Hopwood did not say what injuries the woman had.

“We are aware that there were a number of people in the area at the time of the assault,” Sgt Hopwood said.
