Nearly 200 more Banned Drinkers Orders have been taken out against people in Katherine between March and April, which the NT Police said is part of “proactive measures” to reduce spiralling crime and antisocial behaviour due to a “sudden surge of people” in the troubled town.

Police reported that the period from February to April witnessed a 354 per cent increase in the issuance of BDOs by local authorities. In April alone, 145 individuals were denied the purchase of alcohol due to having an active BDO, police said.

Since March this year, police in Katherine have also made 280 referrals to SupportLink, which provides targeted assistance and diversion options to those needing social services. These referrals aim to address critical issues, including domestic and family violence, substance dependence, and homelessness, police said.

The number of BDOs increased continuously from 73 persons in February to 141 in March, totalling 332 persons in April.

“Our members have seen a noticeable increase in the demand for our services due to a sudden surge of people into the Katherine Region,” Commander Terry Zhang said.

“In response to this, we have shifted to proactively tackling the drivers of crime and antisocial behaviour through support services and alcohol restrictions. In addition to these changes, we will also welcome a further 15 new constables who will start in Katherine from mid-June to further enhance our targeted operations.”

Cmdr Zhang stated that police have continued to collaborate with various organisations in Katherine, including the local council, on early morning patrols targeting rough sleepers and a joint operation with Public Housing Officers to address problematic tenancies.

“Police would like to thank the Katherine Community for their ongoing support and reiterate our commitment to keeping the Katherine community safe,” he said.
