The Palmerston man who was shot at six times by police after allegedly raising a spear at officers last month in Gray has been charged by the NT Police.

The now 20-year-old Indigenous man was shot by one officer and taken to hospital on March 8 in a critical condition.

It is still unclear how many bullets hit the man, however he survived the incident and remains in hospital.

He was charged by police on Monday with one count each of going armed in public, assaulting police and conduct endangering life.

Police said in a statement that two officers responded to an unrelated incident “when they were confronted by the man who was armed with a spear”.

“The man raised the spear at one of the officers despite repeated warnings,” an unattributed police statement said.

“One officer discharged his firearm, shooting the male. The male was taken to hospital in a critical condition and has since recovered.”

Assistant commissioner Michael White was appointed to lead the investigation. Last month, Mr White claimed the other police officer had discharged their taser but there was no mention of that in the statement.

“The Northern Territory Police Association have been advised throughout the investigation,” the statement said.

“The Office of the NT Independent Commissioner Against Corruption and the NT Ombudsman were advised for independent oversight.

“As the matter is now before the court there will be no further comment.”

It is unclear what the status of the officer involved in the shooting currently is.
