UPDATED: Police have arrested a 52-year-old man in connection to an alleged hit-and-run that saw a woman who was lying in the road run over in Darwin City on Tuesday night.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said the woman was hit on Lindsay St between Woods and Cavanagh streets about 8pm, and was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

He said witnesses said the driver of the white sedan did not stop, and drove away.

“From the footage we’ve reviewed so far, the vehicle appears to be a late-model white Toyota sedan,” he said.

Police said on Thursday that they located the vehicle in an undisclosed northern suburb and executed two search warrants to seize the vehicle and other property belonging to the man, which was then forensically analysed.

The man was interviewed by detectives and was later charged with hit-and-run causing serious harm.

“If you hit someone on the road, you are obliged by law to stop and report it as soon as possible.  This man didn’t and he’s been charged accordingly,” Snr Sgt Lindner said.

“Fleeing from a crash scene after hitting someone is an exercise in futility.  We have shown time and again, that such offenders will be identified and brought before court.

“We would like to thank the public for assisting the investigation.  The information provided has again proven crucial in allowing us to quickly identify the driver.”

The man has been remanded to appear in the Darwin Local Court today.

The woman remains in a “critical and unstable condition” at RDH.
