A female pedestrian was killed after being hit by a car on the Stuart Highway near Knuckey Lagoon, NT Police said.
Police director of communications Mark Wilton said in a statement that about 8:20pm Wednesday police received a report that a vehicle had struck a pedestrian on the highway near Knuckey Lagoon.
“The driver did the right thing, remained at the scene, called triple-0 and cooperated with the police. St John paramedics attended the crash however, the woman, aged 42, was pronounced dead at the scene,” he said.
Mr Wilton said the Stuart Highway was closed for most of the night while police investigated.
Police are asking anyone who saw the woman being hit, or who has dash-cam footage, to call them at 131 444.
There must be a public register of these incidents where people walk out on the road and end in fatalities and critical incidents!
Whilst it is unimaginable pain for the families of the deceased/seriously injured, the charges of manslaughter and legal costs defending the charges must be stressfull for the driver.
This is a very common phenomena in the NT and it needs to be formally addressed by the courts!!
