A female pedestrian was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital with multiple fractures after police said she walked onto the Stuart Highway in Darwin, and was hit by a car.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said in a statement that about 10:50pm Wednesday, police received reports that a 4WD travelling outbound on the Stuart Highway at the intersection of Westralia St, Stuart Park had hit a female pedestrian crossing the road.

He said the driver stopped a short distance away and police found the 46-year-old woman, wearing dark coloured clothing, still on the road with serious injuries.

She was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital with multiple fractures, police said.

Snr Sgt Lindner said the driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs and but police do not know yet if the woman was affected by alcohol or drugs.

“The crash was captured on CCTV and shows the at-fault pedestrian walking into the path of the oncoming vehicle which was travelling through a green light intersection,” he said.

Police are asking anyone who saw the crash to call them on 131 444 and quote reference 24049974.
