The Lawler Labor Government’s decision to spend $57 million to establish two new women’s detention facilities is an “expensive step in the wrong direction”, critics say, who argue the money could be put to better use in the “broken” NT justice system.
Justice groups criticised the government’s announcement of two new separate women’s prisons – one in Darwin at the current Don Dale premises that will also house male detainees temporarily and another at an Alice Springs rehab facility – that will be funded in the 2024-25 Budget, with Attorney-General Chansey Paech claiming the government is invoking a “common-sense corrections model”.
