Only 100 days until local government elections

by | May 15, 2025 | News | 0 comments

Territorians are being encouraged to have their say on who they want as their council representatives in the upcoming local government elections, which are now just 100 days away.

NT Electoral Commissioner Kirsten Kelly is calling on residents across the NT to ensure they are prepared to make their voices heard in the electoral process.

“Local councils are the closest level of government to the community, making decisions that shape everyday lives—from pools and sporting fields to roads and footpaths,” she said.

“If you’re 18 or over, make sure your enrolment is up to date and include your contact details so we can send you a reminder when it’s time to vote. If you will be turning 18 on or before election day, you can enrol now to vote in this year’s local government election.”

Territorians have until 5pm on Tuesday, July 22, to enrol or update their details on the Australian Electoral Commission website.

Elections for 15 of the 18 Territory councils are set for August.

Voters will have several options to cast their ballots, including early and mobile voting starting Monday, August 11.

Election Day is scheduled for Saturday, August 23, and postal voting will also be available, with applications for postal voting opening on May 23.
