A tip-off prompted the NT Police to stop a vehicle at Cahill’s Crossing, suspected of trafficking drugs and alcohol into Arnhem Land, resulting in the arrest of a 31-year-old man on November 10.
The NT Drug and Organised Crime Division has since charged the alleged offender with supplying commercial quantities of cannabis.
In a statement, police reported they received information indicating a Mitsubishi Pajero loaded with illegal drugs was making its way to West Arnhem Land after visiting the rural regions of Darwin.
Officers in Gunbalanya stopped the vehicle at Cahills Crossing and executed a search warrant.
During the search, police discovered six pounds of cannabis, two 700ml bottles of spirits, and 2,000 empty clip-seal bags.
The vehicle was confiscated, and the driver faced several drug-related charges, including supplying a commercial quantity of a Schedule 2 drug and illegally bringing alcohol into a restricted area.
“We are committed to targeting the supply of cannabis into our remote communities,” Senior Constable Mark Bond said.
Constable Bond stressed that the spread of illegal substances not only jeopardises the health and welfare of the community but also leads to social and economic damage.
“We will continue to disrupt the supply and distribution of illicit substances at every opportunity.”
Police are asking anyone with information regarding the distribution of alcohol or drugs in our communities, to call them on 131 444 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
