Officers swerved at by vehicle attempting to evade arrest; lying cop praises police efforts

A planned arrest in the northern suburbs quickly escalated Thursday morning, after a 25-year-old male and another man used a vehicle to swerve at police officers, smashing into a police vehicle, with the event ending after a foot chase through a school oval and a taser being deployed, NT Police said.

Strike Force Trident and the dog operations unit established a cordon around the Bagot community on Thursday morning at 7:30am, after receiving a tip-off that the 25-year-old man with an active arrest warrant for domestic violence offences was in the community and who had been evading police.

The man and another man were seen shortly after the search was started in a vehicle driving erratically through the community, including on the footpath.

“A tyre deflation device was deployed, which the offending vehicle attempted to avoid by swerving at officers and colliding with the rear of a Trident vehicle,” police media director Mark Wilton said in a statement.

“Multiple pursuits were commenced; however, they were terminated shortly after for safety reasons.”

The dog unit members later saw the vehicle stopped on Buchanan Terrace in Nakara around 8:30am, before the offender and passenger fled the scene on foot.

It was around then that police deployed a taser “which was ineffective”, with the offender running through a school oval on Nakara Terrace.

“Patrol Dog Boss was deployed, but the 25-year-old male scaled a 12-foot fence and fled. A second dog handler followed over the fence, caught up to the man, and he surrendered without further incident,” Mr Wilton said.

“The 30-year-old male passenger was also arrested and is assisting police with enquiries.”

Police said the 25-year-old remains in custody with further charges pending.

Police media quoted Snr Sgt Meacham King in their statement praising the officers’ handling of the situation, but considering Mr King has lied on multiple occasions to the Coronial Inquest into the death of Kumanjayi Walker – and has not been disciplined by the NT Police executive for committing perjury and possible other crimes – the NT Independent could not verify if what he was saying in the police press release was true.
