A 35-year-old male NT police officer has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and suspended with pay, NT Police said.

In a brief press release Monday afternoon, media manager Rob Cross said only that the officer was bailed to appear in Darwin Local Court on January 21. Details around the charges, including when and where the alleged assault occurred and when the officer was charged were not disclosed.

“The officer has been suspended with pay and the matter is under investigation by the Professional Standards Command,” the statement said.

“As the matter is now before the courts, no further information will be provided.

“This information is provided in accordance with the NT Police Transparency Guidelines.”

Last September, two officers were charged for cocaine and weapons offences and in October, a 37-year-old male officer was charged with rape and property offences.

And last April, a 53-year-old Alice Springs officer was charged with high-range drink driving. Only the officers facing the drug charges were suspended without pay.
