NT Govt offering cash for new ideas to attract, retain skilled workforce

The Fyles Government has created a $3 million fund that will be available to local businesses and industries with new ideas to ease workforce shortages by boosting partnership on projects and activities that help attract and retain skilled workers.

Grants of up to $200,000 are available to business consortiums on a 25:75 co-contribution basis which will be overseen by the Territory Workforce Advisory Group.

The advisory group will be providing the government with advice on industry needs and informing initiatives to drive economic growth, ease workforce shortages and increase the Territory’s skilled population.

The seven-member group is made up of Territory business owners and industry leaders across aviation, construction, hospitality, human services, agriculture and ICT.

Chief Minister Natasha Fyles said the funding package is seen to strengthen the local workforce by providing more local jobs to workers moving to the Territory, which will translate to more money flowing back into the local economy.

“This new initiative falls under our $12.8 million Workforce Boost Package and will help important sectors across the Territory such as construction, tourism, hospitality and agriculture fill critical workforce shortages,” Ms Fyles said.

Businesses can participate in the fund through Grants NT by submitting proposed projects as part of the registration process. Under the scheme, consortiums only have to contribute 25 per cent of the total expenses while the Flexible Workforce Solutions Fund covers 75 per cent of the total cost. The 25 per cent co-contribution for not-for-profit organisations can be in-kind, the government said.

The Flexible Workforce Solutions Fund will have two funding rounds, with the first opening on July 4 and ending on August 15.

Seasonal workforce strategies, levering new technology or innovation or delivering direct, in-country worker recruitment services are among those eligible for funding.

“I encourage Territory businesses, registered training organisations, community organisations and local government associations to work together and submit their project proposals to the Flexible Workforce Solutions Fund,” said Minister for Business, Jobs and Training Paul Kirby.
