Proposed changes to the NT’s mining laws that the Fyles Government says will “provide certainty” for the resources industry through upgraded environmental regulation by restructuring the Environmental Protection Act has been welcomed by environmentalists but criticised by industry for lacking coherency.
The government said the reforms would boost the powers of the Environmental Protection Act through more thorough environmental impact assessments and approval processes for mining activities in the NT, with responsibility transferred out of the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade and into the Department of Environment.
