Northern Suburbs residents living in the Waters Ward will hit the polling booths on Saturday for a by-election with three potential candidates vying for council after Justine Glover announced her early resignation from the position in May.

Kim Farrar, Gary Haslett, and Robin Lawrence have put their names forward to fill the position of councillor for the community.

Waters Ward covers Eaton, Moil, Wulagi, Wagaman, Anula, Malak, Marrara, Karama, Coonawarra, Berrimah and Winnellie.

Ms Farrar, a fourth-generation Territorian, said she is running for council to make sure her local community feels heard and to advocate accessibility for disabled persons as she had noticed the poor infrastructure design in the community.

Mr Haslett, a previously long-term Waters Ward elected member, from 2012 to 2021, said his main four points of focus would be improved street amenity, tackling law and order, improving dog control and keeping rates and charges low.

He vowed to “move things faster” if re-elected tomorrow. Mr Haslett has been living in the Territory since 1966.

For his part, Mr Lawrence said he is running as councillor to keep rates down and enhance green spaces in the northern suburbs.

He said his campaign centres on keeping rates down “because that’s what hits families the most, is paying out rates”.

Mr Lawrence is a born and bred Territorian and has lived in Wagaman and Anula since 1981 and currently works for the NT Government in Mineral Titles.

Election places open tomorrow at 8:00 am and close at 6:00 pm. Voters can vote in the following locations: O’Loughlin Catholic College, 70 Mueller Road, Karama NT 0812; Moil Primary School, Moil Crescent, Moil NT 0810; and Sanderson Middle School, 60 Matthews Road, Malak NT 0812.
