There will be no changes to the NT’s bail laws following a five-month “expert review” in connection to the death of 20-year-old bottleshop employee Declan Laverty, the Fyles Government has announced, while moving to introduce greater powers for police to search people for knives and other weapons.
Chief Minister Natasha Fyles announced the new powers on Monday and said her government would also be introducing changes to the Weapons Control Act that would see machetes included as knives, but would not be making any further changes to the Bail Act, based on advice from an “expert task force across government”.
Typical pathetic response by Labor. Bailed to roam the streets is not preventing re-offending and is absolutely no deterrent to committing further crimes. The current use of GPS trackers seems to be a waste of resources. If we don’t have enough police or corrections officers to monitor and control people on bail, then their conditions should require them to reside at a suitable place where they won’t offend.
