News Brief: NT ranked last again in latest economic report

The Northern Territory has ranked last in the country for economic growth for the 13th straight quarter, according to CommSec’s State of the States report.

The January 2022 edition of the quarterly report has the Northern Territory ranked in eighth place again, signifying the slowest economic growth of any jurisdiction. The report ranks states and territories based on their performance compared with their decade-average.

The NT’s economic growth was up only 3.7 per cent, the report found.

The NT was last in seven of eight of the key economic indicators, with the exception of construction work which saw a 22.7 per cent growth.

Dwelling commencements were down 66.5 per cent, with only 111 commenced in the last quarter to December.

The population growth rate versus the decade average was also slow, showing the NT was down 93.8 per cent over ti decade average.

A positive was retail spending up four per cent on the decade average, recording just over $850 million in the last quarter.
