Darwin’s Consumer Price Index increased a modest 0.8 per cent in the last quarter to December, but had the biggest increase of all the capital cities overall in 2021, recording a six per cent rise, figures released by NT Treasury show.

The other eight capital cities average CPI was up by 2.9 per cent, with Canberra’s increase as little as 1 per cent and Hobart’s up by 2.2 per cent.

The two biggest factors to the rise in the Darwin CPI were transportation and housing. The increase in transportation (up 8.2 per cent) was driven by the global oil price rise, while the housing increase (up 10.4 per cent) was driven by the rise in rents.
