New warning to retailers as more counterfeit cash splashed around

More $50 and $100 notes have recently been used across the Territory, NT Police have warned, with police seizing more than $20,000 in fake currency since last September.

NT Police said in a statement Thursday that the recent seizure follows “an increase in the attempted importation, possession, and use of counterfeit notes at businesses across the Northern Territory”.

The latest warning follows the NT Police warning retailers about fake notes in early December.

The fake notes are of “reasonable quality”, Detective Senior Sergeant Corey Borton said, noting the give away was the word “COPY” printed in small text on one side, with the texture paper-based not polymer. The money identified in December had the word “PROPS” written on it.

“Northern Territory Police urge all retailers to stay alert. If you think a note is fake and it is safe to do so, do not accept it,” Snr Sgt Borton said.

“Police recommend that if you believe you have received counterfeit money, put it in an envelope, record how it came into your possession, and call police on 131 444.

“Alternatively, if you know someone in possession of counterfeit currency, you can make an anonymous report to police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

Those found making, importing, buying, selling, possessing or using counterfeit cash can face up to 14 years in prison under the Crimes (Currency) Act.

More information about identifying fake money can be found on the Reserve Bank of Australia website.
