New mural every fortnight for 2020 Darwin Street Art Festival

by | May 12, 2020 | COVID-19, News | 0 comments

This year’s Darwin Street Art Festival will see local artists turning the CBD’s walkways and buildings into canvases to produce inspired murals as COVID-19 restrictions lift.

Territorians will be able to visit the street art trail in the CBD with stage two restrictions easing from noon on Friday, May 15.

A mural will be created every fortnight across Darwin until September, with 15 murals expected to be completed during the festival.

This street art festival has also created jobs for Territory local artists.

Self-taught local artist Jason Lee, has this week begun painting a blank wall at 79 Mitchell Street.

Born and raised in Darwin, Mr Lee draws his artistic influences from his Larrakia ancestry and the Larrakia language and cultural practices, creating a mix of contemporary and traditional styles. He has been part of the festival since its inaugural event in 2017.

“The Darwin Street Art Festival provides opportunities for many artists to grow their skills and it’s been great to see our local talent go on to produce artworks done gain recognition nationally and even internationally,” said Darwin Street Art Festival Co-Curator, David Collins.

Territory artists are being encouraged to join the art festival. Mr Collins will be mentoring local artists.

“With two weeks between each artwork, I’ll be able to spend more time mentoring and supporting artists to ensure they gain new skills, as well as produce amazing artwork for our city,” Mr Collins said.
