NT Police suspect a human leg found along the Stuart Highway on Tuesday near Coolalinga was likely the result of a crash between a vehicle and a pedestrian, but have no idea where the person missing part of their leg might be.
The leg was discovered by a passing motorist on Tuesday morning, which the police later confirmed was the “lower leg of a dark-skinned human”.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Morrissey said on Wednesday morning that after reviewing dashcam footage submitted by motorists, police now believe there was an incident involving a vehicle hitting a person on the inbound lane of the Stuart Highway between 8pm and 9pm Monday night.
“Information received since the event from members of the public have suggested that a collision has occurred at that location between the hours of 8pm and 9pm on Monday evening,” he said.
“The owner of the leg has not been identified, nor the rest of the person.”
Police had contacted hospitals and health clinics on Tuesday, but could not identify anyone missing part of their leg.
Snr Sgt Morrissey said it is still possible the person survived the collision with a vehicle.
“The additional information was … (likely) survival, but would need medical treatment as soon as possible,” he said.
Anyone who had travelled the Stuary Highway on Monday evening between 8pm and 9pm from the Howard Springs lights to Viriginia Rd is being asked to call police on 131 444.
Police are also still seeking any dashcam footage from the area.
