More photos of Labor members doing drugs possible but no drug problem in party: Gosling

There may be more photos circulating of Labor members doing drugs, but that doesn’t mean there’s a drug culture in the party, Federal Labor MP Luke Gosling says, suggesting those photos would only be made public to damage the Chief Minister.

Mr Gosling was interviewed on Mix 104.9 this morning where he was asked about his former staffer, and current Young Labor president Harvie Stiller, who resigned from the staffer job last week after video surfaced of him snorting a white substance that appeared to be cocaine.

Mr Gosling said Mr Stiller apologised to him personally and resigned.

“He apologised to me that this had sort of happened, and offered to resign and I accepted that resignation,” he said.

“But I’ve been checking in with him to see if he’s alright and caught up with him last night. I think he’s going to learn a lot from these lessons and he needs to.”

Mr Stiller remains the president of Young Labor, despite resigning from Mr Gosling’s office and apologising. It was unclear what exactly he had apologised for.

“I think it’s been a difficult time for him, but you know, the consequences of his actions,” Mr Gosling added. “He’s got to learn those lessons.”

Party president Erina Early has refused to respond to questions about why Mr Stiller would resign one role but not the other or why the party wouldn’t remove him from the executive management position.

Mr Gosling said he did not know if Mr Stiller was still in the party role, because he doesn’t “get involved in the party issues to that extent”.

He added, however, that the party was “working through” the issue and that questions could be put to the party.

But Ms Early again refused to respond to the NT Independent’s questions, including if the party condones illegal drug use.

The snorting video was shared on social media last October, a year after it was produced in 2020, that showed Mr Stiller snorting the white substance with a $50 note and the caption “18th birthday lines” at the bottom of the video.

Photos on Territory Labor’s Facebook page showed Mr Stiller played an active role in the party during the August 2020 election – two months before the snorting video – including campaigning with senior Labor politicians including Chief Minister Michael Gunner, Mr Gosling, Mark Turner and others.

Asked whether there is a drug culture inside Territory Labor, Mr Gosling responded “no”, before qualifying the response.

“Tomorrow there might be, because someone out there that wants to do the Chief Minister harm, has got another photo,” he said.

“But from what I know, what I’ve seen of the conduct of people in the party, you’ve just got people who want working people to have a better deal … and I’ll leave all the other politics and carry-on to others because I’m cracking on with the job.”

During the fallout from the Labor cocaine sex scandal last year, Chief Minister Michael Gunner said that he had been made aware of allegations of cocaine use among staffers on the fifth floor of Parliament but did not investigate the matter.

The Labor Government used its numbers in Parliament last week to defeat a CLP motion calling for random drug testing of politicians and their staff.
