More people charged over abduction of Grace Hughes

Two more people have been charged with child abduction for their alleged role in the disappearance of five-year-old Grace Hughes, NT Police said, leaving the door open for more charges as they work to “identify all parties involved”.

A 67-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man were charged with one count each of abduction of a child under 16 years.

The pair were bailed to appear before Darwin Local Court on October 26, police said.

It has been alleged the girl was taken by her mother from a supervised parental visit in Berrimah on August 7, with police searching for the pair for 12 days before it is understood Laura Hinks turned herself in with Grace.

In the days after the pair went missing, police had claimed a group peddling conspiracy theories had assisted in their disappearance, understood to be people calling themselves “sovereign citizens”.

Ms Hinks, a woman named Juliet Oldroyd with connections to the conspiracy group, and the man and woman in their 60s have brought the current total to four people charged for their alleged involvement in the abduction.

Police appeared to suggest on Thursday that further charges to more people could be forthcoming.

“Investigations are still ongoing as we work to identify all parties involved in this abduction,” Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Jon Beer said.

“Police would again like to thank the community who assisted and the other policing jurisdictions, the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, who provided vital support.”
