NT Police are investigating the death of a pedestrian in an Alice Springs road crash on Sunday morning, as well as the alleged hit-and-run of another pedestrian in Katherine on Saturday, that left that person in hospital with serious injuries.
Police said the Katherine incident involved a driver intentionally hitting the pedestrian, causing significant injuries to the male, before fleeing the scene.
The death in Alice Springs occurred around 12:59 am on Sunday, when police said a silver SUV station wagon heading south on Telegraph Terrace collided with a pedestrian. Emergency services responded, but the man who is yet to be identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The vehicle’s driver was unharmed and is cooperating with police in with their inquiries, a police statement said.
“A crime scene has been established on Telegraph Terrace, investigations are ongoing and both south bound lanes are currently closed and are expected to remain closed for some time,” police said on Sunday morning.
The alleged hit-and-run incident occurred in Katherine on Saturday morning, around 2:30am, when a driver allegedly deliberately struck a man pushing a shopping trolley across the road before fleeing the scene.
The incident occurred when the pedestrian, aged 31, was struck by a white Holden Colorado ute, sending him to Katherine Hospital before being moved to Royal Darwin Hospital for further care.
Police said the driver of the white Holden Colorado ute intentionally targeted the individual, who was at the time pushing a shopping trolley across the highway at the crossroads of Stuart Highway and Giles Street.
CCTV captured the incident, police said.
“As the vehicle neared, the driver deliberately drove towards the pedestrian, striking him,” police media director Mark Wilton said in a statement.
“Police are actively seeking the whereabouts of the vehicle involved, a white Holden Colorado with NT registration CE85VO.
“Anyone who witnessed the incident or may have dashcam footage from the area at the time is urged to contact police on 131 444 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.”
