Three more police officers were attacked while arresting two suspects in separate incidents across the Territory over the weekend, NT Police said, with at least one requiring medical attention.
The first incident involved a female officer allegedly being kicked in the stomach during the arrest of an outstanding offender in Kiwirrkurra on Saturday afternoon by joint NT and Western Australia Police.
The 30-year-old man was taken into custody by the WA Police and will face an additional charge for assaulting the police officer.
A second incident occurred in Moulden at 7:40pm when one police officer was allegedly kicked in the head several times while another officer suffered a cut to the face after an object was reportedly thrown by a 28-year-old woman resisting arrest.
The woman was being arrested for breach of a Domestic Violence Order and will face an additional charge of two counts of police assault, police said.
One police officer required treatment to his face as a result of the attack.
Police noted that assaults on frontline officers across the NT have increased over the last several months, including one recent span that saw 12 officers assaulted in less than two weeks earlier this month.
“The continued assault of police officers attending to calls for assistance from the public is of concern,” Territory Duty Superintendent Peter Dash said in a statement.
Supt Dash added that the police will not tolerate assaults against emergency responders and will ensure that the offenders are brought before the courts.
The NT Police Association has repeatedly called on the Gunner Government to listen to their concerns about officers being assaulted in the line of duty and stop delaying publicly releasing the findings of a “working group” examining the issue.
