The NT Environment Minister has given gas giant Santos environmental approval for its Darwin gas pipeline duplication project, with the NT EPA’s environmental assessment highlighting potential significant impacts from the project, including dredging, but also cited the NT government’s economic strategy for the Middle Arm industrial precinct.
The 120km Darwin pipeline – 100km in NT waters and 20km in Commonwealth waters – will bring gas from the Santos’ Barossa reservoir in the Timor Sea to Darwin. It is a duplication of the existing Bayu-Undan pipeline that will provide Santos with the option of pumping carbon dioxide to the depleted Bayu-Undan reservoir for sequestration.
