A motorbike rider has been killed after colliding with a tree along the Stuart Hwy near Mataranka, NT Police said.

Superintendent Greg Pusterla said in a statement the 59-year-old man’s bike collided with a tree on Saturday afternoon, about 70km south of Mataranka.

He said a driver, who witnessed the crash, called police about 4.30pm, and that it appeared the rider was travelling south when he veered off the highway, and collided with a tree. Police said the man died at the scene.

“It does not appear as though any other vehicles or people were involved in the crash,” Supt Pusterla said.

Police are asking for anyone who saw the crash, and anyone with dash cam footage, to call police on 131 444.
