UPDATED: A man who allegedly killed a pedestrian in a hit-and-run in Coconut Grove on Wednesday night, has turned himself into police, after authorities released a description of his vehicle on Thursday.
Police said a 42-year-old man who was on the road was struck and killed by a car on Progress Drive around 11:50pm Wednesday.
The driver did not stop to report to incident or render assistance, police said.
The driver was charged on Friday with Hit & Run causing death and bailed to appear in Darwin Local Court on June 13.
Police had declared a crime scene while Major Crash detectives worked through the night to recover forensic evidence at the scene, including CCTV footage.
They described the car involved in the hit-and-run as a “light-colour older model sedan” and called for the driver to come forward.
“I urge the driver to attend a local police station as soon as possible,” Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said on Thursday afternoon.
“It is not too late to do the right thing and hand yourself in before we identify you.”
NT Police issued a statement Thursday evening to say the alleged driver turned himself in, but provided few details.
“The man was arrested after handing himself in to detectives at Darwin Police Station this afternoon,” Det Snr Sgt Lindner said.
“His vehicle was located on Woods Street and declared a crime scene while Major Crash detectives and forensic crime scene examination officers inspected the vehicle. It has since been seized by police.”
Police had struck a task force to investigate the death, called “Operation Mandible”.
Det Snr Sgt Lindner thanked the public for providing information and CCTV footage.
“The investigation remains in its early stages and we continue to urge anyone with information to contact us on 131 444,” he said.
“It is a lawful requirement of all drivers to stop and help after a crash and report to police. If you flee a crash scene, you will be caught.”
