A 30-year-old man who engaged the NT Police in a five-hour standoff from the ledge of a Darwin CBD hotel on Thursday afternoon that saw him allegedly throw bottles at officers is now facing 18 charges over the incident, including assaulting police and depriving a person of personal liberty.

NT Police said they attended the Luma Luma hotel complex to speak with a woman in relation to an alleged assault that occurred earlier in the week when they encountered the 30-year-old man at her accommodation.

“He made himself known before evading police by climbing onto different balconies,” NT Police media manager Rob Cross said in a statement. “The man situated himself on a small ledge and refused to cooperate with police directions.”

Reports from the scene on Thursday indicated the man had hit at least one police officer with a bottle that required medical attention.

Police said in the statement that the dog operations unit and the Tactical Response Group were brought in to deal with the situation.

“Police negotiators attempted to engage with the man for five hours before TRG apprehended the man,” Mr Cross said.

He is now facing 18 charges including seven counts of aggravated assault, two counts of depriving a person of personal liberty, tow counts of threatening to kill a person, two counts of choking, stangling, suffocation (domestic), assaulting a police officer and being armed “with an offensive weapon” among other charges.

The man is expected to appear in Darwin Local Court on Friday.
