NT Police have said a man drowned near Stokes Hill Wharf in Darwin today.

Media manager Rob Cross said in a statement witnesses told police the man dived from a boat to recover a dinghy but got into trouble and drowned before he could be rescued about 11.45am.

He said the body of the 60-year-old man was pulled from the water at an undisclosed time. Mr Cross provided no more information.
