A 23-year-old man has died in a head-on collision involving a Honda CRV and a road train on Sunday afternoon, 14 km north of Katherine on the Stuart Highway, NT Police said.
Detectives from the Major Crash Investigation Unit said the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received reports about the collision around 4:50pm Sunday afternoon.
Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, where the 23-year-old male driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 58-year-old driver of the road train suffered minor injuries and was taken to Katherine Hospital for “blood testing”, police said.
A crime scene has been established, and the investigation is ongoing, police said. A suspected cause of the fatal crash was not provided.
NT Police is urging anyone with information about the incident or who may have dash-cam footage to contact them at 131 444, quoting reference number P25200551.
The Stuart Highway was closed in both directions for nearly 12 hours on Sunday while Major Crash investigated the scene, reopening at 4:30am on Monday.
The recent fatality raises the total number of lives lost on Territory roads to 24 this year, a significant decrease from 40 during the same period last year.
