A 59-year-old male has died after being struck by a vehicle around 6pm last night on the inbound lanes of the Stuart Highway nearby Yarrawonga Road in Palmerston, NT Police said.

Emergency services were called to the scene and conducted CPR but the man died shortly after, while the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene of the accident.

Major Crash detectives are asking witnesses to come forward to assist with the investigation.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said police are reviewing dashcam footage and attempting to determine how the crash occurred, including the man’s possible alcohol use and potential vision impairment.

“There was a number of vehicles in the immediate area when the crash occurred, so we will be looking at the scene in a forensic way to see whether there was any opportunity for the driver to avoid the crash,” he said.

“The area is well lit, it is used by a lot of pedestrians in the area, there is a pedestrian crossing only 400m down the road.”

Detectives said anyone who was in the vicinity or witnessed the accident can call the police on 131 444 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.

Last night’s collision is the latest in the succession of pedestrians killed in road accidents in the Territory, including hit-and-runs earlier in the year. Eleven pedestrians have been killed on Territory roads this year.

In April, a 63-year-old man was killed after being hit be a vehicle in Palmerston and two others were charged for hitting a woman in Coolalinga after her leg was discovered on the side of the road.

There are now 46 deaths on Territory roads total this year. The figure is higher than last year’s total 29 deaths during the same period in 2021.
