A 33-year-old man has been charged over alleged domestic violence against a woman and traffic and drug offences committed in Darwin on Sunday, including making a threat to “burn or explode”, NT Police said.

Police director of communications Mark Wilton said in a statement the charges related to the man making violent threats against a woman he knew in a home in Wanguri about 7.30am Sunday.

He said that about 2pm police began chasing the man who was driving near the Shoal Bay dump before he was arrested near the outbound lane of the Stuart Highway at Knuckey Lagoon after running off from his car.

Mr Wilton said the man remains in custody and had been charged with two counts of damaging property, one count each of making a threat to burn or explode, using a carriage service to harass, aggravated burglary, driving in a dangerous manner, recklessly endangering serious harm, driving while disqualified, driving with a prohibited drug in his body, and drug possession.

He is scheduled to appear in Darwin Local Court today and police said there may be additional charges laid at a later date.

Police are asking anyone with information, particularly anyone with CCTV, dash cam or mobile footage, to call them on 131 444, or upload the evidence to a police portal.

If you or someone you know are experiencing difficulties due to domestic violence, support services are available, including, but not limited to, 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732) or Lifeline 131 114.
