A man has been charged with the rape of a woman on the Tiwi Islands, while in an unrelated matter, a woman on the islands has been charged after allegedly breaking a man’s arm with a blunt object, NT Police said.

NT Police director of communications Mark Wilton said a 53-year-old man was charged after a local health clinic reported the sexual assault of a woman about 1.30am on Friday at an unspecified location on one of the Tiwi Islands.

“The victim was medically evacuated to the Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment to serious but not life-threatening injuries,” Mr Wilton said.

He said Northern Domestic Violence Investigation Unit and Sex Crimes Division investigators, along with Forensic Services officers, went to the island to investigate.

“Later in the morning, the alleged male offender…was arrested and later charged with sexual intercourse without consent and aggravated assault. He was also served with a domestic violence order,” Mr Wilton said.

He said the man was remanded in custody to appear in the Darwin Local Court on Monday.

Also about 1.30am on Friday, police allege a 23-year-old woman was arguing with a man she knew before grabbing an unspecified blunt object and hitting him at an unspecified location on one of the islands.

“As a result, the male victim suffered a broken arm, initially receiving treatment at the local clinic, before being medically evacuated to the Royal Darwin Hospital for further treatment,” Mr Wilton said.

He said the woman was arrested later in the afternoon and charged with unlawfully causing serious harm and two counts of going armed in public. She was also served with a domestic violence order.

The woman was remanded in custody to appear in the Darwin Local Court on Monday.
