A man has been charged with murder over the death of a woman in Alice Springs on Sunday, NT Police said.

Police director of communications Mark Wilton said in a statement the 39-year-old man is believed to have known the woman and was charged with murder late on Tuesday night.

The relationship between the two was not given.

Mr Wilton said the alleged offender was remanded in custody to appear in Alice Springs Court on Wednesday. Christopher Dixon is the only person listed to appear on a murder charge in Alice Springs Local Court today.

There has been little information released, with no details of how the woman allegedly died with police having said the 41-year-old woman was reported to police as being dead in a Braitling home about 8am Sunday.

Both The Australian and the NT News reported the woman was found in a town camp in the north of the town.
