A man was arrested in Alice Springs for allegedly stealing a car in NSW and stealing fuel in Tennant Creek, NT Police said.

Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Budge said in a statement the 36-year-old man was arrested in Alice Springs on Monday with the Victorian-registered vehicle he was driving reported stolen from Dareton on the Murray River in NSW.

Snr Sgt Budge said that about 7:45am Monday police received reports of a driver allegedly leaving without paying for fuel from a service station in Tennant Creek, and said the vehicle was monitored by local police as it headed south along the Stuart Highway.

He said the car was stopped with tyre spikes on the Stuart Highway south of Alice Springs, and the man was charged with driving a motor vehicle without consent, theft, driving a vehicle in a dangerous manner and running a red light.

The man was remanded to appear in court today.

“I commend the collaborative efforts of all involved to successfully bring this vehicle to a safe stop and apprehend the driver,” Snr Sgt Budge said.
